Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect to the Wireless Mesh?
Using a laptop computer or desktop computer with wireless capabilities, open the listing of available wireless networks. If you are in a coverage area, "Abingdon Mesh" should appear as an unsecured network. Click to connect to "Abingdon Mesh" (not Mesh 24 or Mesh 49). Once connected, open a web browser, which should then redirect you to the Mesh Terms of Use page. Once you have agreed to the terms of use, your browser will go directly to www.abingdon.com. You are free to browse using the mesh!

Why can't I see the Mesh in my wireless networks?
The Strix® Outdoor Wireless System (OWS) is designed to flood the coverage area with a Wi-Fi signal. The signal is strong, but may not be strong enough to penetrate the walls of your residence. IF this is the case, take your wireless laptop outside and see if your signal strength improves. If it does not, you are located in a dead-zone and will be covered in following phases. If your signal does improve outdoors, contact the Town of Abingdon I.T. Department for information on a home antenna to bring the signal inside from outside.

Is it safe to shop or bank online while using the Mesh connection?
Yes. The 'unsecured' nature of the Abingdon Wireless Mesh simply refers to the fact that you need no password for a connection. The Mesh is protected by several security measures behind the scenes, and you, the user can take certain steps to ensure security as well. If your bank or shopping sites are rated as 'hacker-safe' or secured through special certificates, their security, as well as the security built in to your computer operating system make it safe to use secure sites via the Mesh connection.

Why is my connection failing because of Exceeding Maximum Subscribers?
Unfortunately, the Abingdon Wireless Mesh currently only supports a limited number of users. We will be expanding our coverage and connection abilities simultaneously through following phases. This error means the maximum number of users that can be on at one time are on at that time. The licenses expire after one hour, so check back within one hour of the failure for another connection attempt.
