Abingdon is one of the oldest English-speaking settlements west of the Blue Ridge. Founded in 1778, Abingdon was first named Wolf Hills by Daniel Boone. Abingdon boasts a twenty-block historic district that includes many historical attractions.

Haint Mistress Donnamarie Emmert tells where the skeletons are buried....literally!
Now in its 14th year, Abingdon Spirit Tours are led by the one and only Haint Mistress, Donnamarie Emmert. This popular tour, especially in the month of October, can be reserved throughout the year, weather permitting. It is a two hour walking tour of downtown Abingdon, where visitors;are entertained with; bits of Abingdon history as well as local ghost lore. Named a Passionate Virginian in 2009 by Virginia Tourism, Donnamarie Emmert packs a whole lot of storytelling and animation into each tour. She can also be contacted for tours of the Martha Washington Inn, where she is the resident Tour Master.

The Hagy House is a circa 1805 log home located off of Hillman Highway. The house is a significant structure because of its German design influences in a region usually associated with the Scots-Irish.

It was originally the home of Jacob Hagy, one of the founders of the Hagy Wagon Company. The home is currently undergoing restoration.

Retirement (2nd oldest brick house in Abingdon) - Show Details

The exact date of the homes construction is unknown but reports state that it was built between 1776-1813. The original structure was built by Captain Robert Craig.

The house was named "Retirement" by Captain Craig because he was "withdrawing from active life" when he moved to the area in 1808.
