When to Obtain a Building Permit
A Building Permit is required to:
- construct, enlarge, alter, move, demolish or change the use of a structure
Electrical Permits are required for:
- installations in new construction
- addition to or alteration of any existing work
Plumbing Permits are required for:
- installations in new construction
- adding any new plumbing fixtures(sinks, water closets, bathtubs, floor drains, sewage ejectors, hose bibs, electric water heater, etc.)
- changing or moving an existing drain or vent
Mechanical Permits are required for:
- the installation of new mechanical equipment
- changing existing ductwork, gas piping or appliance vents
- replacement of electric water heaters, gas water heaters, oil-fired water heaters, electric furnaces, heatpump and air conditioning condensing units are exempted from permit requirements in R2, R3 and R4 use groups as long as the replacement is of similar type and capacity.
How to Apply for a Permit
Applications for Building Permits should be submitted with relevant construction documents. These documents shall include the following:
- a site plan showing the relationship of the proposed structure to existing buildings on the property and adjacent property lines (for new structures)
- a scaled drawing with floor plans, elevations, sections and any other details required by the Building Official, signed by person responsible.
Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical and Fire Protection Permits will be issued after:
- Any required information, schematic drawings or diagrams has been reviewed and approved.
- After associated Building Permit has been issued. (if required)
